How to live with a beeswax candle

A few quiet habits. The wax will do the rest.

The wick

Trim to 5–6 mm before every lighting. Too long smokes; too short will not melt outward.

The first burn

A pillar needs the melt pool to reach the edge. About one hour per 2.5 cm of width. That pool is the memory later burns follow. Tapers want a snug, heat-safe holder and no draught.

Draughts

Keep away from fans, open windows, air-conditioning. A draught pushes the flame and makes an uneven burn.

How to extinguish

Do not blow. Dip the wick into the pool, then straighten it. Less smoke, easier next lighting.

How to store

Cool, dry, out of strong sun. In summer keep them away from a hot sill. In winter they are content in a cupboard.

The white film

Beeswax can bloom — a pale film on the surface. It is not dust and it is not a fault. A soft cloth lifts it if you would rather see the gold. Many leave it.
